Systolic vs Diastolic Dysfunction | Heart failure nursing, Diastolic heart failure, Cardiac nursingTypes of Heart Failure Left Side Heart Failure The heart pumping action moves oxygen-rich blood while traveling from the lungs to the left atrium, then to the left ventricle, which pumps it to the rest of the body. The left ventricle supplies most of the pumping power of the heart, so it is larger than the other chambers and essential for normal function. In left or left ventricular heart failure (LV), the left side of the heart should work harder to pump the same amount of blood. There are two types of left-side heart failure. Drug treatments are different for both types. Right Heart Failure The pumping action of the heart moves the "used" blood that returns to the heart through the veins through the right atrium in the right ventricle. Then the right ventricle pumps the blood back from the heart into the lungs to replenish it with oxygen. Right or right ventricular heart failure (RV) is usually caused by a failure on the left side. When the left ventricle fails, the increased fluid pressure is, in effect, transferred back through the lungs, ultimately damaging the right side of the heart. When the right side loses the power of pumping, the blood rests on the veins of the body. This usually causes inflammation or congestion in the legs, ankles, and inflammation within the abdomen, such as the GI tract and the liver (caused ascites). Congestive heart failureCongestive heart failure (CHF) is a type of heart failure that requires seeking timely medical care, although sometimes the two terms are used invariably. As the blood flow of the heart decreases, the blood that returns to the heart through the veins rests, causing congestion in the tissues of the body. Often the results of inflammation (edema). Most of the time there is swelling in the legs and ankles, but it can also occur in other parts of the body. Sometimes the fluid accumulates in the lungs and interferes with breathing, causing shortness of breath, especially when a person is lying down. This is called pulmonary edema and if not treated it can cause respiratory difficulty. Heart failure also affects the ability of the kidneys to have sodium and water. This retained water also increases inflammation in body tissues (edema).
